Nelson Mandela making ‘remarkable progress,’ says daughter

Despite having spent recent weeks in critical condition at a Pretoria hospital due to a recurring lung infection, Nelson Mandela is reportedly improving enough that he may be allowed to go home, his daughter said.

Mandela spent Wednesday—the day before his 95th birthday—watching TV with headphones on, reports the Los Angeles Times, demonstrating much more alertness than he has been.

“[He] gave us a huge smile, and he responds very well ... with his eyes, and he nods and sometimes he lifts his hand like to shake your hand,” Zindzi Mandela said of her father, according to ABC News. “He is making remarkable progress.”

South Africans and admirers of the anti-apartheid activist have been hoping for the best but preparing for the worst as Mandela’s condition seemed grim.

However, Zindzi says “I should think he will be going home anytime soon.”

This sentiment was echoed by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who has said he is “quite certain that one of these days Madiba will go back home.”

“There was a time that we were all extremely anxious and worried, and we were prepared for the worst,” Zindzi commented. “But he continues to amaze us every day.”
