Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will challenge Republican Sen. Mike Enzi in the 2014 primary election, she announced Tuesday.
Cheney’s announcement sets off an early battle within Wyoming’s Republican Party.
“I am running for the United States Senate because I believe deeply in the values that have made our state and our nation great. I’m running because I believe it is necessary for a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate,” she said, according to the Hill.
“I’m running because I know as a mother and a patriot we can no longer afford simply to go along to get along. We can’t continue business as usual in Washington,” said Cheney, 46. “I’m running because I know we’re taxed more than enough already.”
Cheney, a Fox News commentator and State Department official during the Bush administration, grew up in Virginia and moved to Jackson Hole last year, reports USA Today. She has been a frequent speaker at Republican Party events in the state.
Enzi, 69, said that he still plans to run for reelection and claims that Cheney went back on an earlier pledge.
“She said that if I ran, she wasn't going to run, but obviously that wasn't correct,” Enzi (right) said. “I thought we were friends.”
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said that he would support Enzi: “He's my friend, he's my mentor. He's a tremendous senator for the people of Wyoming.”
He added of Cheney: “She’s very talented and has a bright future.”
