Egypt’s interim President Adli Mansour swore in the country’s interim Cabinet on Tuesday, including three women but no members of the main Islamist groups that have won five straight elections since 2011.
Liberals were given multiple key positions, according to Lebanon’s Daily Star. The government’s reformist attitude was also demonstrated in its inclusion of three women, a record number for the Egyptian government.
Mansour’s spokesman had said that positions would be offered to members of the Muslim Brotherhood, but they quickly declined, saying they will not participate in the military-backed transitional political process. They have also pledged to protest until ousted president Mohamed Morsi is reinstated.
The Cabinet is headed by interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi. Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sissi retains his position as defense minister and serves as the country’s first deputy prime minister.
The military has continued to battle Morsi supporters as their protest his removal from office. Seven died and more than 260 were wounded between Monday night and Tuesday morning, reports Reuters.
“It's an illegitimate government, an illegitimate prime minister, an illegitimate cabinet. We don't recognize anyone in it. We don't even recognize their authority as representatives of the government,” said Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad.
