Thousands of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi crowded the streets on Saturday to protest the deaths of at least 36 Morsi supporters Friday.
Outside the Rabaa Al Adawiya mosque, Islamist leaders gave impassioned speeches and carried four coffins of those killed yesterday, according to the Los Angeles Times. Demonstrations in Cairo’s Nasr district were peaceful.
“Down with military rule,” demonstrators chanted, waving Egyptian flags and carrying pictures of Morsi.
“To those of you remaining quiet, have you received your rights?” some asked.
Pro-Morsi demonstrators took the streets after the military ousted Morsi on Wednesday, following seven months of protests against the leader, the country’s first democratically-elected president.
At least 12 died in Alexandria on Friday, reports the BBC, and eight in Cairo due to military fire. More than 1,000 were injured.
Morsi has been detained as the military formed an interim government. Adli Mansour, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, was named interim President of Egypt. Pro-reform and opposition leader Mohamed AlBaradei, a Nobel peace Laureate, was named interim prime minister on Saturday, reports the Washington Post.
