‘Rizzoli & Isles’: 'Dance with the Devil' recap

This episode of Rizzoli & Isles focuses on the Paddy’s trial. On the first day of Paddy's murder trial, Maura gains insight into her father from Hope. Korsak opens up about Cavanaugh's tragic past. And in an unexpected twist, Maura must decide which side she's on when she and Jane unravel a shocking secret about Paddy and Hope that affects them all.

The episode begins with a flashback. In 1993 Paddy was responsible for the death of Lt. Cavanaugh’s wife and child. We find out that the untimely killing of Arson detective Calvin Ghetts died recently has been connected to Maura’s mob boss father. From the beginning of the episode, Paddy had the upper hand by killing off the star witness for the prosecution and making the court consider letting him go on bond. The gang wants to find out how Ghetts is connected to Paddy. Eventually, Maura and Frost head over to Ghetts’ widow’s home to hand over the collection money they gathered and investigate. They confiscate an old vehicle with the intent to take it apart to find evidence that links Paddy with Cavanaugh’s family.

Frost, Maura, and Jane find photos in the exhaust pipe. This leads Maura to Hope. This episode marks the first real time that Hope has tried to make a connection with Maura. She helps make coffee with Maura and they got all geeky about it like two coffee aficionados should. Hope also helps take care of Cavanaugh after he tried to kill Paddy in a bar. However, after finding the evidence, Maura connects Hope with Paddy. Hope helped bandage up Paddy after setting Cavanaugh’s apartment on fire. Hope has to testify.

The episode ends with Maura, Korsak and Jane at the courthouse. Then they find out that Cavanaugh is there with Paddy. The two are in the bathroom. Cavanaugh is prepared to kill Paddy but Maura tells him that Hope will testify against him. That knowledge devastates Paddy because he loved Hope.

Overall, this was a fantastic episode. It is clearly the best episode this season. It was very dramatic and the little comedy that this episode had, worked. Frost had a much bigger role in this episode and he should. Lee Thompson Young is a good actor; give him more to do. Besides that, people should jump on board.
