A sheriff said Thursday that the remains of two people have been found in Colorado Springs as a result of the Black Forest wildfire that has been blazing since Tuesday afternoon.
One of the deceased had been reported missing, according to the Houston Chronicle. Another person, reported missing on Wednesday, has been found safe, said El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.
The remains of the second deceased were found an hour after the first.
The fire is reportedly the most destructive in Colorado history. It has destroyed at least 360 homes in the densely-populated Colorado Springs area, reports the Washington Post.
The fire, which has been five percent contained, is anticipated to damage even more homes as it continues to burn through miles of dry wooded areas.
The fire has burned approximately 15,000 acres in Colorado Springs, Maketa said on Thursday, according to International Business Times. High winds, with gusts between 30-35 mph, have encouraged the fire to spread.
“The wind is probably our No. 1 threat. It has been a game changer. It was very dynamic. And winds today are supposed to pick up and continue on the next few days,” Maketa said in a press conference.
The Black Forest fire has surpassed last June’s Waldo Canyon fire, which destroyed 347 homes and killed two people.
“I never in my wildest dreams imagined we’d be dealing a year later with a very similar circumstance,” said Maketa.
