Second Louisiana plant explosion in days kills one, injures seven

One person has died and seven are injured as a result of an explosion in a CF Industries chemical plant in Donaldsonville, La., on Saturday.

Ronald “Rocky” Morris Jr., 55, from Belle Rose, La., was killed in the explosion after working at the plant for 34 years, according to the Washington Post.

State Police Trooper Jared Sandifer said officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate once the plant is safe.

This explosion is the second in Louisiana this week. On Tuesday, a Williams Olefins chemical plant exploded. The blast ultimately killed two employees.

The injured employees were Courtney Julien, Melvin Singleton, Jeramy Worsham, and Kade Yarbrough. The three others injured were contractors and have not been named.

None of their injuries were life-threatening, according to the Huffington Post. Only one worker remains hospitalized.

The plant manufactures chemicals such as ammonia and other nitrogen fertilizers, but officials said there were no hazardous materials at the site.

Plant manager Louis Frey said, “We don’t know exactly what happened,” but he believes that “a small vessel ruptured,” reports CNN.

“There was no explosion and no fire,” Frey insisted. “It ruptured.”

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeffrey Wiley said, “It was kind of like a balloon popping.”
