Nelson Mandela on life support

Former South African President and revolutionary Nelson Mandela is now on life support, after being hospitalized on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.

Multiple sources have alleged that the condition of Mandela, 94, has continued to deteriorate, necessitating that he be placed on life support, reports NY Daily News. His family would not confirm or deny the reports.

“I can’t comment on private matters,” Nandi Mandela, one of his granddaughters, said.

A Pretoria newspaper called The Citizen first reported the news, which was then confirmed by five sources, two of whom had recently visited Mandela, according to the Globe and Mail.

President Obama, who has just arrived in Senegal, plans to visit South Africa on Friday. Upon hearing of this visit, Mandela reportedly opened his eyes and smiled, his daughter Zindzi said.

On Sunday President Jacob Zuma said that Mandela was in critical condition, an unfortunate downgrade from his previous “serious but stable” classification.

Mandela’s admirers have left myriad signs outside the hospital where he is staying, accompanied by balloons and stuffed animals, reports CNN.

“He’s going to feel a lot better when he sees these signs,” said Mandela’s grandson-in-law, David Manaway.

Members of Mandela’s family met with clan elders on Tuesday to discuss “sensitive family matters.”
