Jack White makes donation to save Detroit theater

Jack White paid $142,000 in taxes needed by Detroit’s Masonic Temple to stop foreclosure. The Temple’s Cathedral Theater will be renamed the Jack White Theater in his honor.

“We could not be more humbled to bestow this honor on Jack,” Roger Sobran, president of the Detroit Masonic Temple Association said according to the Detroit Free Press. The Temple is 27,878-square feet, seats 1,586 and now bears White’s name.

According to Rolling Stone the Detroit native has taken the stage many times and has watched many acts on the stage as a kid when his mother worked there as an usher. White is known as the vocalist for The White Stripes until their split in 2011 and has collaborated with The Rolling Stones, Alicia Keys, and Bob Dylan.

“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” Sobran said. “Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words.”

White was suspected to be the secret benefactor of $170,000 used to repair a baseball field at Detroit’s Clark Park in 2009.
