Democrat and potential Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will receive the 2013 Liberty Medal this September in Philadelphia, presented by none other than former Republican governor of Florida Jeb Bush.
Bush is chairman of the National Constitution Center, which awards the Liberty Medal annually to a man or woman who has worked towards spreading liberty to peoples around the world, according to the organization’s site.
Clinton is being honored for her career in public service and women’s advocacy efforts, reports the Washington Times.
“The Liberty Medal recognizes individuals who have furthered the ideals of freedom, democracy, and equality, often against great odds. Hillary Clinton has devoted her life to expanding opportunities for 'We the People' not just in this country but around the globe,” said Jeffrey Rosen, National Constitution Center President and CEO, reports the Star Tribune.
Her work as secretary of state has reportedly earned her the medal. During her time in the Obama administration, she traveled to more than 80 countries, setting a record for the U.S. Secretary of State position.
She was described as “a champion of human rights, democracy, civil society and opportunities for women and girls around the world.”
“Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to serving and engaging people across the world in democracy,” Bush said in the announcement.
“These efforts as a citizen, an activist, and a leader have earned Secretary Clinton this year’s Liberty Medal.”
The medal was established in 1988, reports Philly News. Former recipients include people from all walks of life, such as former president Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell, Sandra Day O’Connor, Bill Clinton, Bono, and Steven Spielberg.
