Broadway to get 'A Night With Janis Joplin'

A musical about tragic folk-rock singer Janis Joplin is coming to Broadway this fall. A Night with Janis Joplin, will premiere on The Great White Way in October, starring Mary Bridget Davies as the tragic star who died in 1970 at the age of 27.

The show was a popular hit when it ran earlier this year on the West Coast. The LA Times declared that “in a cosmic collusion of persona and perception, this electrifying concert musical resurrects the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll with the sort of seismically sensational results normally encountered at stadiums and pop festivals.” It is the highest grossing production for the Pasadena Playhouse where it ran as One Night With Janis Joplin until April. And Variety lauded its “immensely talented singers,” who will accompany the show to Broadway, including director Randy Johnson who also wrote it.

The show is short on narrative but big on live performances including signature Joplin hits like “Tell Mama,” “Piece of My Heart,” and “Cry Baby.” The musical was produced in a partnership with the Joplin estate and with Jeffrey Jampol who manages it.

A Night With Janis Joplin is set to open on October 10th at the Lyceum Theatre. Preview performances are set to begin on September 20th.
