‘Orphan Black’ recap – 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful'

This episode entitled “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” focuses on the aftermath of the events from episode nine. The orphans have to make deals with Dr. Leekie and the pro-clone.

This episode starts off with Sarah revealing to Helena that they are related and Sarah introduces Helena to Amelia their “biological” mother. Also at this time Sarah gets arrested. Meanwhile, Helena escapes from Mrs. S’ basement. Dr. Leekie and associates send Sarah a lawyer and she gets out scot-free before telling Art the whole story. This is when Rachel Duncan the pro-clone is revealed.

This episode had a lot of reveals. In fact, there were more than usual. The minor reveals involved Cosima and Allison. We find out that Cosima is coughing up blood. At this time we don’t know what her illness is. While at Felix’s place along with most of the other clones in the beginning of the episode, Cosima teams up with Delphine to find out that all of the clones have patented DNA. Allison goes over to Aynesley’s house and witnesses her die. Aynesley gets her scarf caught in the garbage disposal and strangles herself. We also find out that Donnie was Allison’s monitor all along. Also, Art and Angelia find out about Allison from Vic and figures out that she is a totally different person from Sarah and Beth.

The major reveals revolve around Helena and Sarah. Their plot line revolves around Amelia. Helena disguises herself up as Sarah and takes Amelia back to Beth’s condo. Then Helena kills Amelia and takes her body back to a warehouse. Sarah gets a call from Helena and goes to kill her because Rachel Duncan wants her. Amelia reveals that Mrs. S is not who she says she is and Amelia hands Sarah a photograph. Sarah kills Helena and calls Duncan to tell her that the deed is done.

However, when she goes to the building where Duncan is Sarah learns from Cosima that the clones are property and any deal with Duncan will lead to her doom. In the end Allison makes a deal with the pro-clone and we see that Donnie was Allison’s monitor all along. When Sarah sends Duncan a message, Duncan orders someone to take Kira.

Season Review

The first season of Orphan Black was spectacular! There are many entertainment options out there but this show is one of the best sci-fi shows in the last decade. What makes this show work is Tatiana Maslany. She plays every clone and plays a clone playing another clone. Each portrayal is fresh, unique, and individualized to the clone’s persona and to how the clone would play another clone. In fact, there is not a bad performance on this show.

If you combined Sherlock and Fringe, you get Orphan Black a cornucopia of strange-awesomeness. The season finale was probably the weakest episode in this season. What that means is that it should have been the first episode of the second season. The show isn’t hard sci-fi but it has some real science in it. However, the show is a about playing God and the ramifications it can cause. This show is an ethical conundrum that unfolds before our eyes. There are many revelations and twisting plot lines. As a first season goes, Orphan Black gets 9 out of 10. I can’t wait for season two.
