Walt Whitman's birthday

The famous American poet was born May 30, 1819 in Rhode Island. He grew up Brooklyn and had almost no formal education. Whitman, despite this became well known as the first true American poet. His most notable works included Leaves of Grass and Drum-Tap. Whitman was not fully acclaimed as he deserved during his life. He was not because his poetry spoke openly about sex, and other unnerving issues. Also his works deviated from the traditional style as well.

Whitman did not utilize meters and rhyme patterns that were indicative of his time. Also, Whitman had a particular interest in long cadences and in poem styles from the Bible. His difference from other contemporaries was what marked a transition in art between transcendentalism and realism.

Whitman was held in high esteem and respect by British authors and by such American authors as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson regarding Leaves of Grass said it was "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed."

Sadly Whitman suffered a serious stroke in 1873. He was then subsequently moved to his brother's home, located in Camden, New Jersey. His poetry however outlived him, becoming immortal in the annals of literary history; in American Culture. His work inspired other future poets such as Allen Ginsberg and D.H. Lawrence. His work will stand the test of time and his words will continue to harking the spirit of the American soul.
