Ryan Murphy has been chosen to honor the legendary television producer, Norman Lear, at the 40th International Emmy Awards.
"I remember watching his shows when I was young and being moved by them. The way he tackled social issues so directly and opened a conversation about things no one wanted to talk about was fascinating to me," Murphy said, as quoted by The Huffington Post.
Lear's sitcoms include All In the Family, Maude and The Jeffersons. He wasn't afraid to incorporate social issues of the time like racism, sexism, abortion, rape and homosexuality in his show's episodes.
"I try to do the same in my work, most recently with the `Obama Mama' episode of The New Normal, which was inspired by All in the Family," Murphy said about attempting to do what Lear had done with his shows.
Murphy, who will be receiving the 2012 International Emmy Founders Award according to Deadline, will present the 40th Anniversary Special Founders Award to Lear as well as actor Alan Alda.
"Each of them is an iconic person in the history of the television business ... who were part of that incredible vanguard of a new kind of socially relevant, often in-your-face, television programs that really did change the medium," the president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Bruce L. Paisner, was quoted by The Huffington Post.
The ceremony will take place Monday at the Hilton New York Hotel hosted by Regis Philbin.
