The Ryan Davidson Trio’s self-titled debut CD is a mix of original tracks and jazz standards infused with elements of rock, country and Romantic period classical music. This weird combination of styles is reminiscent of the experimental/alternative sound that Medeski Martin & Wood have popularized over the years. However, the Ryan Davidson Trio falls slightly short in executing spellbinding arrangements like MMW.
That’s not to say the trio’s efforts fail in emitting passion or poignancy. Tracks like the Stan Jones Western piece, “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” and “Texas Oracle” bleed raw emotion and intoxicating guitar riffs. Their interpretation of the Thelonius Monk classic “‘Round Midnight” is another highlight that also demonstrates their incredible range as musicians since they can jump between genres without missing a beat.
And of course, let’s not overlook their vast experience: guitarist Ryan Davidson, bassist Ryan Hagler and drummer Ryan Jacobi have certainly made their mark in the industry, sharing the stage with greats like Dave Brubeck, James Carter, Eddie Gomez and George Garzone, among countless others. Yet for whatever reason, there just seems to be something missing which keeps this CD from meeting the high expectations it aspires to.
