U.S. Rep. David Wu has announced his resignation following accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances toward the daughter of a fundraiser.
The seven-term congressman from Oregon’s first district also engaged in erratic behavior that led campaign staffers to resign en masse following his re-election last November.
“The time has come to hand on the privilege of high office,” he said Tuesday. “I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations. The well-being of my children must come before anything else.”
Wu plans to step down once the Obama administration and congressional leaders resolve the debt-limit impasse.
“This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues,” he added. “It is also the only correct decision to avoid any distraction from the important work at hand in Washington.”
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi requested an investigation into the allegations against Wu on Monday, asking the House Ethics committee to look into an incident involving an 18-year-old woman who left a voicemail in May alleging “aggressive and unwanted sexual behavior.”
Wu, 56, announced in February that he sought mental health treatment when staffers pleaded with him to undergo psychiatric evaluations.
