A campaign operation carried out in the second quarter of 2011 by President Obama raised $86 million for the Democratic National Committee and its own coffers, shattering the record for off-year fundraising in a three-month period and trouncing the collective amount raked in by Republican candidates.

The dollar total includes $47 million that were raised for Obama’s reelection campaign and $38 million raised jointly with the national party committee.

Obama’s haul topped the previous second-quarter record of $60 million, which George W. Bush established in 2003. The campaign’s goal was to match Bush’s record, but they far exceeded expectations.

“We did this from the bottom up,” Jim Messina, Obama’s campaign manager, said in a statement. “We didn’t accept one single dollar from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs. A commitment no other presidential campaign has made, and which the Republican National Committee also refuses to make.”

Messina added that a record-breaking number of donors, 552,462, contributed to the cause, with 98 percent of those people giving $250 or less.

The current GOP field is estimated to have collectively brought in $35.6 million during the second quarter, including $18 million from former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Republican candidates raised $118 million by the same stage in the 2007 race.
