The latest poll numbers show that Americans strongly disapprove of the way the debt-ceiling crisis is being handled by congressional leaders, with Republicans faring the worst and President Obama earning the highest marks among those involved in the ongoing negotiations.
A staggering 71 percent of participants in CBS News’ new poll disapprove of the way Republicans are handling the talks. Only 21 percent of those surveyed support the GOP’s resistance to raising taxes. More than half of the Republican respondents disapprove of their own party’s handling of debt-limit negotiations.
The approval rating for Congressional Democrats stands at 31 percent, with just 32 percent disapproving of their own party’s handling of the quest to raise the debt ceiling before the August 2 deadline.
Obama has earned a 43 percent approval rating, but the dissatisfaction of the American people is evidenced by the fact that 48 percent still disapproved of his actions.
As Politico notes, the latest poll numbers could be a strong indicator of who will receive the lion’s share of the blame if the government is unable to avert a catastrophic debt default.
While there appears to be plenty of skepticism surrounding lawmakers’ ability to come to a much-needed agreement, 66 percent predict that a deal will be reached ahead of a looming default.
