INTERVIEW WITH MOTORBABY FROM TheCelebrityCafe.com ARCHIVES
Sharon has taken her musical career to new hights using the internet, and her other talents in acting
DM) How has your web site affected your musical career?
SM) It's completely empowered me. A "stamp of approval" so to speak. For instance, I was approached by Billboard Magazine to perform at their "Cafe," (which is an in house performance up at their office's). I was told that usually they don't ask artists who aren't "signed to a major label" to do the Cafe but since I had such an amazing web site they decided they would ask us. You see, a web site gives the perception that you are professional, that you have funding, etc. If you want to be taken seriously by this industry you better have your s--- together... that means get a web site.
DM) How did you come about in starting the record company?
SM) It was a very natural process. Having had a web site since the early 90's and after having been through the major label and indie route it was a VERY easy move to make. I believe that Aimee Mann is doing the same exact thing that I am. Taking control of ones destiny is always a scary but exciting thing. I know it won't be easy but the choice's that are out there at this time don't really cut it. Doing it on ones own (with help of course) is simply more lucrative.
DM) At times you've been cast as a sex symbol (Beastie Boys videos and being put on the cover of numerous magazines. Do you feel that being viewed that way takes the focus away from you musical abilities?
SM) Not really. I think it only helps and adds to the mystic. Modeling is excellent exposure. Look at Milla Jovovich! She's a STAR model/actress and rocks out too. I like to use everything I've got to make a statement about my art. I feel very fortunate to be able to do that.
DM) You've also tried a bit of acting. How did you get involved with that?
SM) Acting has also been a natural process. For me it's evolved from doing loads of music video's. Look, entertainment is entertainment. Whether you sing, dance, act, model it's really all for entertainment's sake. Remember Vaudeville? Well, it's the same thing here. Back then you had to be able to dance, sing, act. You had to do it all, and very well or you lost your job.
DM) Of all the areas of entertainment that you've tried, music, modeling and acting, which gives you the most pleasure?
SM) I enjoy every one of those things very much and they all give me tons of pleasure.
But I have to say that music is the closest thing to my heart and will probably always be.
DM) What is your song writing process?
SM) Sometimes I won't write for a very long time and then all of a sudden I'll feel the urge
to be creative and I'll sit down, grab my acoustic guitar, turn on my little tape recorder
and amazingly enough out pours an idea or two. Then I'll sit on that for a few days, thinking about it, come back and fine tune everything.
DM) When did you first start in music?
SM) I started playing guitar at age 7, but took songwriting and singing seriously around 1983.
DM) You've been compared to numerous female artists, which comparisons do you find flattering?
SM) All of them! Most of the women I'm compared to are very successful people. To name a few, Chrissy Hynde, Alanis, Madonna, Debra Harry and David Bowie (he's not a women but he's one my favorites)
DM) What do you see as next in your career?
SM) The undertaking of finishing my new record and releasing it via Motorbaby.com . Then promoting it correctly.
DM) With so many of the arts that you've tried, which do you want to be remembered by?
SM) I'd like to be remembered as a person who has followed their dreams. Even though the road has been long, hard and winding. A person who has persevered through it all.
All the things I do are apart of me and they are all important. It would be nice to be remembered for them all.
